Questions with Brenda Lee

Imagine a career in music that spans five decades. Imagine sharing the stage with the likes of Elvis and The Beatles. Imagine selling more than 100 million records. Brenda Lee doesn’t have to imagine any of it—that’s the life she has lived. From “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” to “I’m Sorry,” Brenda has left an indelible mark on both pop and country music. NCW caught up with Little Miss Dynamite to talk family, friends, cooking and cruising—on the next Country Music Cruise, of course.

What’s your favorite dish to cook for your family?
A roast or homemade spaghetti and meatballs.

What’s the best part of being 4 feet 9 inches tall?
The best part is me! I like being little. I’ve learned to embrace it.

What’s been your most embarrassing moment onstage?
Well, there have been several. I’ve had my clothes fall off onstage. I fell into the orchestra pit. I’ve had many moments. But they weren’t really embarrassing. These things happen and you go with the flow.

What’s one thing you have learned from your grandchildren?
Patience. And strength.

How do you like to spend your free time?
With my family, first and foremost. And with friends and co-entertainers.

If you could only keep three possessions, what would they be?
I would keep my husband, my daughter with her two children and then my other daughter with her daughter. And I would keep Christ.

What’s the best vacation you’ve ever taken?
Every year we used to go to Destin [Florida] when it was a sleepy little fishing village. We would have a ball. It was wonderful for me. I could get away and not think about anything except for the people that were right there. I could do what everybody else was doing.

What’s the most recent movie you’ve seen?
Spy with Melissa McCarthy.

What’s your favorite song to perform live and will you be singing it on The Country Music Cruise?
All of my songs are like my children. I can’t choose! I’ll be doing ’em all [on the cruise].

Will your daughters and grandchildren join you on The Country Music Cruise, too?
Some sure will. Whoever can make it!

Kelsea Ballerini’s Emotional ACM Acceptance Speech

If you think winning an award doesn’t mean much, then check out the video of Kelsea Ballerini accepting her ACM award trophy for “New Female Vocalist” at this year’s ACM Party for a Cause.

“This is real? This is very humbling. We’re here to celebrate so many other people. Three years in a row! We’ve got to thank our songwriting buddies. It all starts with a song and that saying never gets old. This right here is just icing on the cake.”

Tyler Hubbard

“I just wanna say thank you to the ACM and thank you God, all the people that believed in us as a duo from the beginning. We never take you for granted.”

The 51st ACM Awards, co-hosted by Dierks Bentley and Luke Bryan, will air live from the Las Vegas MGM Grand Garden Arena April 3 at 8 p.m. ET on CBS. Here’s a complete list of the nominees in categories that will be awarded during the show.
